FAQ's about Transmissions

What is an Automatic Transmission?

The modern Automatic transmission is at the heart of your vehicle. It is the most complex and critical part of your car, taking inputs from sensors throughout the vehicle (road speed, engine speed, accelerator position etc) it selects the right gear to efficiently transmit the power from the engine to the drivewheels.

Automatic transmissions contain oil called "transmission fluid" to control the clutches, cool and lubricate. The level and quality of this fluid should be checked regularly and replaced if needed. See your owner's manual for maintenance recommendations.

The 'Trans Light' or 'A/T' light is flashing

This indicates that your transmission computer has sensed a problem. As transmission specialists we can diagnose this for you.

I have only one gear

Your transmission has engaged the fail-safe mechanism or limp mode. If this happens it's vital that you get your vehicle to us for repair.

The engine is revving during gear changes

This is called flaring and as soon as you notice this problem book your vehicle in for a check up. The problem will only get worse as it is a sure sign that the transmission needs attention.

When the vehicle is in Drive 'D' or Reverse 'R' it doesn't move.

Sorry to say that your transmission has a major fault and will have to be transported to the workshop for repairs. We can arrange this for you.

Are rebuilt transmissions OK?

We take great care to rebuild and recondition your transmission so that it operates as well as when new. Our work is backed up with a 25,000km / 15 month warranty to give you peace of mind.

What if I authorise transmission repairs?

If you authorise repairs, you are entitled by law to inspect and receive parts that were removed from your vehicle and replaced. If you would like to take this option please let us know.

When should I replace an automatic transmission filter and fluid?

Automatic transmissions are made to be trouble-free for 100,000 km or more, but they won't last if they don't get regular maintenance. We suggest a service and flush every 12 months to change the filter and fluid to prolong the life of the transmission. When was the last time you had your transmission serviced?

Should I fit an auto transmission oil cooler?

Because overheating is the main cause of automatic transmission failure, some people choose to install an auxiliary oil cooler for automatic transmission fluid. Most automatic cars come standard with a separate heat exchanger for the transmission fluid just below the radiator. However if your vehicle is used regularly to tow loads, drive off road or roads where lower gears are often used, it would be worth while to have an oil cooler fitted.

What are the warning signs of a faulty automatic transmission?

Usually there will be indications of a fault with your automatic transmission long before you run into serious trouble. So here are a few warning signs to look out for.

  • Feel the motion - If your transmission doesn’t feel the way it used to. Be on the lookout for gear changes that happen later or take longer than you expect. They may be jerky, or not as smooth as they should be. A shuddering gear change is always cause for concern.
  • Listen - Listen to the your engine. If the engine revs between gears, that’s a sign that something is wrong with the automatic transmission. If the revs are high, but the vehicle moves too slowly or not at all. Unexpected, unusual noises could be a telltale sign of trouble too.
  • Smell  - Sometimes faults show themselves through a burnt smell. This could be the transmission fluid.
  • Failsafe mode - If your vehicle is equipped with a failsafe mode, this may engage. Failsafe keeps your vehicle in one gear if there is a problem with the transmission, so you can at least keep moving. If this happens, drive as little as possible and contact us as soon as possible.

Automatic Transmission and Gearbox faults can be hard to identify. If you spot anything that causes worry, it’s best to get your vehicle to Eastern Automatics as soon as possible. But also remember that prevention is better than cure, and a regular vehicle and transmission service is your best course of action to prolong the life of your vehicle and save you money.
